When he was like you: René González Sehwerert
Author: Ana María Luján Drawings: Joel Pernas
When he was like you: René González Sehwerert Once upon a time, there was a boy who ran to say hello to all the airplanes he listen to. -I´ll drive one of them someday-, he exclaimed. That was his dream. This boy I´m telling you about is Renecito. He was born in August 13th, 1956, in Chicago, the United States of America. His parents Irma and René were Cuban emigrants and told him many things about his homeland. They returned in 1961.
During the journey there was a storm, but it was fun for René, Robe and the other kids. They made kites, ships and planes out of paper, they ran. They finally arrived and saw our flag in El Morro Fortress! Before descending he sang our national anthem.
Renecito went to school here, his mother taught him to swim, to practice scuba diving, he also played volleyball, basketball, baseball and he loved reading... and he still look at the sky!
When he was young he became a tank engineer and went to accomplish a mission abroad. When he returned he became a pilot! Another mission, even more risky, was about to happen. He went to Miami to avoid terrorist actions against Cuba, from inside the counterrevolutionary groups. That´s why he is unfairly imprisoned and we consider him a hero.

One day Ché Guevara visited a factory and took in his arm a child who was pulling his jacket. That was Renecito.
